The WBCS Exam Scheme and Syllabus provides the complete structure of the West Bengal Civil Service examination, including the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, Optional Subjects and Personality Test.

According to the official scheme, the WBCS Preliminary Examination consists of one General Studies paper and serves as a screening test for admission to the Main Examination. The WBCS Main Examination consists of six compulsory papers, with an additional optional subject comprising two papers for candidates applying for Group A and/or Group B posts. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the Main Examination and Personality Test taken together.

WBCS Examination Scheme at a Glance

The WBCS examination structure can broadly be understood in three stages:

Preliminary Examination → Main Examination → Personality Test

The Preliminary Examination is only a screening test. Its marks are not considered for final selection.

The standard of the paper is at the level of knowledge expected from a graduate of any faculty of a recognised university.

Purpose of the WBCS Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is meant to serve only as a screening test for the purpose of selecting candidates for the Main Examination.

The marks obtained by candidates in the Preliminary Examination will not be considered for final selection.

Only candidates who are declared qualified in the Preliminary Examination in a particular year will be eligible for admission to the W.B.C.S. (Exe.) etc. Main Examination of that year.

The official scheme further states that the Final Merit List will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the Main Examination and Personality Test taken together.

The standard of the Arithmetic portion will be similar to that of the Compulsory Mathematics paper at the Madhyamik Examination of the Board of Secondary Education, West Bengal.

Standard of WBCS Optional Subjects

The two papers of the optional subject are of conventional type.

The standard of the examination is approximately that of an Honours Degree Examination prescribed by recognised Indian universities.

Exceptions are specified for certain professional subjects:

  • Law — standard specified for LL.B.
  • Medical Science — standard specified for MBBS.
  • Engineering subjects — standard specified for B.E. or equivalent courses recognised by Indian Universities/Institutions.

Language of Answers in WBCS Mains

Answers in all papers, Compulsory and Optional, except the language papers, may be written either in English or Bengali, unless otherwise directed in the rules or question papers.

Answers in the following optional papers may also be written in Nepali:

Important Language Rule

Candidates must write the answers to all the questions in only one and the same language in any particular paper.

The official scheme also provides script-related provisions:

  • Sanskrit answers may be written in Devanagari or Bengali Script.
  • Hindi, Nepali and related specified papers may use the prescribed script.
  • Bengali, Arabic, Persian and Urdu have their respective prescribed scripts.
  • Questions for the Santali Paper will be set in Ol Chiki script, and answers should also be written in Ol Chiki.

WBCS Group-wise Main Examination Structure
