The WBCS Exam Scheme and Syllabus provides the complete structure of the West Bengal Civil Service examination, including the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, Optional Subjects and Personality Test.
According to the official scheme, the WBCS Preliminary Examination consists of one General Studies paper and serves as a screening test for admission to the Main Examination. Purpose of the WBCS Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination is meant to serve only as a screening test for the purpose of selecting candidates for the Main Examination.
The marks obtained by candidates in the Preliminary Examination will not be considered for final selection.
Only candidates who are declared qualified in the Preliminary Examination in a particular year will be eligible for admission to the W.B.C.S. (Exe.) etc. Main Examination of that year.

The choice of optional subject is subject to the restrictions specified in the official scheme.
Standard of WBCS Optional Subjects
The two papers of the optional subject are of conventional type.
The standard of the examination is approximately that of an Honours Degree Examination prescribed by recognised Indian universities.

Candidates must write the answers to all the questions in only one and the same language in any particular paper.
